A group of seven alleged members of German far-left group face trial over series of attacks

A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost went on trial on this week, accused for violent actions against far-right activists that resulted in the moniker “the hammer group”.

Global terror listing and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the United States designated the organization as a terrorist group together with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors state the group was responsible for targeting locations in Germany and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a business proprietor in central Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are allegedly accused of employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some with serious injuries.

Trial details and international connections

The trial involving seven defendants is expected to run until July 2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, named as Johann G and Paul M., are additionally accused for attacks in the Hungarian capital during early 2023, coinciding with an annual event called the “day of honour” that draws far-right participants from throughout the continent.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T, is facing trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis prior to the same rally in 2023.

Historical background and group hierarchy

The former East Germany has long been a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that oppose them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a senior figure within the organization, tasked with planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Together with Paul M., he is accused of organizing training sessions where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and simulated violent actions. In storage facilities managed by the suspect, the group reportedly stockpiled hammers, irritant sprays, concealment items and mobile phones.

Previous convictions and international reactions

Another militant formerly involved with the organization, Lina E., became a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation renders organization affiliates ineligible to enter the United States, freezes any assets they may have within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.

Germany's far-right AfD party welcomed the US decision and urged the government in Berlin to take similar action. However, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The threat posed by the organization has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and particularly violent members have either received convictions or remain detained.”
